Legality ¶
We've received a number of questions about the legality of Peggo, so we thought it would be helpful to elucidate on the topic here.
First and foremost, Peggo is used by people around the world and legality depends on many factors like one's location and its according laws. It's up to individual users to determine the legality of their activities.
For users in the United States, and countries with similar laws, Peggo is perfectly legal.
Peggo is a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) that lets you make personal recordings of publicly available media for later use and is protected by the Supreme Court's Betamax ruling (Sony Corporation of America vs Universal City Studios). For context, this is the same ruling that protects the millions of DVRs like Tivo in half of American households.

Audio quality ¶
Peggo records MP3s at the highest qualities available from YouTube and SoundCloud, or optionally from 64 kbps to 256 kbps.
Peggo also does what you expect and avoids wasted space: if the source video's audio can't match the selected bitrate, the source's audio bitrate is used instead. For example, if a YouTube video that's only available at 128 kbps is recorded with 256 kbps selected, the MP3 will be recorded at the correct 128 kbps and not a needlessly inflated 256 kbps.
All YouTube videos are available at 128 kbps, while YouTube videos with higher quality audio are available at 256 kbps. Whether or not a YouTube video's audio is available at 256 kbps depends on the audio quality of the original uploaded video.
You can view the bitrates of YouTube's various formats on Wikipedia here (click [show] to the right of Comparison of YouTube media encoding options).
All SoundCloud tracks are available at 128 kbps.
Silence removal and volume normalization ¶
Peggo helps you maintain a consistent, harmonious MP3 library by performing two helpful operations on new recordings: volume normalization and silence removal.
Have you ever had to reach for the volume dial after changing TV channels, radio stations, or songs in your music library? The problem is that different content has different volumes, and online videos are no different -- some are quiet and some are loud. So you never have to reach for the volume dial between MP3s again, Peggo normalizes every recording to the same, comfortable volume.
Many videos also have silence at the beginning and/or end as part of intros or outros. The silence may be fitting when accompanied by video, but it's often jarring and undesired for audio-only listening. So you're never left with jarring silence between MP3s again, Peggo removes unwanted silence from the beginning and end of videos.
Let's explore Peggo's volume normalization and silence removal with an example.
The above video is two seconds of silence, a quiet scene, and another two seconds of silence. A recording without volume normalization and silence removal would be quiet and disjointed.
Instead, try recording the video with Peggo here (with the Remove Silence and Normalize options checked). The result is an MP3 of just the good stuff at the same, comfortable volume as your existing library. Beautiful.
